Frequently Asked Questions About Japanese Driver's License Translations

Do you want to rent and drive a car, motorcycle, or camper in Japan? Here you will find answers about the requirements, the official JAF driver's license translation, ordering from DriveDocs Japan, costs, processing times, and printing in Japan.

1. Driver's License and Driving Permission in Japan

Can I drive in Japan with a German driver's license?

Yes. With a valid German driver's license, you can generally drive temporarily in Japan if you also carry an approved Japanese driver's license translation. You need your original driver's license and the translation in the prescribed format. Further information can be found in our guide to German driver's licenses in Japan.

Can I drive in Japan with a Swiss driver's license?

Yes. With a valid Swiss driver's license and an approved Japanese translation, you can generally drive temporarily in Japan. You must carry both documents while driving. Further information can be found in our guide to Swiss driver's licenses in Japan.

Can I drive in Japan with a French driver's license?

Yes. A valid French driver's license is accepted for temporary driving in Japan together with an approved Japanese translation. Further information can be found in our guide to French driver's licenses in Japan.

Can I drive in Japan with a Belgian driver's license?

Yes. With a valid Belgian driver's license and the required approved Japanese translation, you can generally drive temporarily in Japan.

Can I drive in Japan with a driver's license from Monaco?

Yes. Driver's licenses from Monaco are among the driver's licenses that can be used for temporary driving in Japan together with an approved Japanese translation.

Can I drive in Japan with a Taiwanese driver's license?

Yes. Special regulations also apply to driver's licenses from Taiwan. An approved Japanese translation is required for temporary driving in Japan. Check before ordering whether your document meets the current requirements.

Do I need an international driver's license for Japan?

That depends on which country your driver's license was issued in. For driver's licenses from Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan, an approved Japanese translation is generally the prescribed method for temporary driving. An international driver's license alone does not replace this translation. For other countries, an international driver's license under the Geneva Convention of 1949 may be required. Further information can be found in our article International driver's license in Japan: What applies?.

What documents do I need to drive in Japan?

If you are driving in Japan with a driver's license from Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Monaco, or Taiwan, you generally need:

  • your valid original foreign driver's license;
  • the corresponding approved Japanese driver's license translation;
  • your passport to prove your entry and length of stay if necessary.

Depending on the car rental company, additional documents may be required. Therefore, check the requirements before picking up the vehicle.

Do I need to carry my passport when driving in Japan?

Your passport may be required to prove your entry and the duration of your driving permission. Therefore, carry it with you during your trip and follow the applicable regulations for foreign visitors.

Is my old grey or pink German paper driver's license valid in Japan?

An older German paper driver's license can generally still be used, provided it is valid and suitable for the Japanese requirements and the required approved Japanese translation is available. Conversion to the credit card format is not automatically required. The key is that the document is legible and the necessary information is clearly identifiable. You can find out more in our article Panic about the grey license: Will Japan reject your old driver's license?.

Is a copy or photo of my driver's license sufficient for driving?

No. For driving in Japan, you must carry the valid original driver's license and the required Japanese translation. A photo, scan, or simple copy does not replace the original driver's license.

Can I use a digital driver's license in Japan?

Do not rely solely on a digital version of your driver's license. For the procedures described here, you generally need the original driver's license and the approved Japanese translation. Clarify special cases with the relevant Japanese authorities and your car rental company before your trip.

How long can I drive in Japan with a Japanese driver's license translation?

For the mentioned driver's licenses from Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan, driving is generally possible for up to one year from entry into Japan, provided the driver's license is valid and the other requirements are met. The driving permission ends earlier if the driver's license expires beforehand. Special rules apply to certain registered residents in Japan upon entry and re-entry. A translation does not extend the statutory driving permission.

Does a Japanese driver's license translation have an expiration date?

The translation itself generally has no separate expiration date, as long as the underlying driver's license data remains unchanged and valid. However, the permission to drive in Japan depends on the statutory time limits. If you receive a new driver's license or important information changes, you should have it checked whether a new translation is required.

Can I drive immediately after receiving the Japanese driver's license translation?

Yes, as soon as you meet all statutory requirements and have the required original documents and the approved translation with you. Pay particular attention to ensuring that your driver's license is valid and that you drive in Japan within the permitted period.

Is the Japanese driver's license translation valid throughout Japan?

Yes. The approved Japanese driver's license translation can be used throughout Japan within the framework of the applicable statutory requirements, for example in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hokkaido, and Okinawa.

Can I drive in Okinawa with a Japanese driver's license translation?

Yes. In Okinawa, the same national requirements generally apply as in the rest of Japan. With a valid driver's license and the required approved Japanese translation, you can drive there within the scope of your driving permission.

Can I drive a camper or motorhome in Japan?

Yes, provided your driver's license covers the required vehicle class and you meet the Japanese regulations. Check the maximum permissible weight and vehicle category of the camper before booking. A translation does not expand your existing driving permission.

Can I drive a motorcycle in Japan with my Japanese driver's license translation?

Yes, if your driving permission includes the corresponding motorcycle class and you meet the statutory requirements. The required class must be indicated on your driver's license and the approved translation. Find out about the vehicle category before renting. Further information can be found in our guide to motorcycle riding in Japan.

Can I continue to drive with my foreign driver's license after a long stay in Japan?

For the mentioned countries, driving permission with a foreign driver's license and Japanese translation is generally time-limited. If you live in Japan longer or have your residence there, you should check in good time whether you need to have your driver's license converted to a Japanese driver's license. The regulations for residents may differ from those for tourists.

2. The official JAF driver's license translation

What is a JAF driver's license translation?

A JAF driver's license translation is a Japanese translation of a foreign driver's license issued by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF). For driver's licenses from Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan, an approved Japanese translation is a requirement for temporary driving in Japan. It makes the information and vehicle classes of the foreign driver's license understandable to the Japanese authorities.

Who is allowed to officially translate my driver's license into Japanese?

The translation must be created by an organization that is approved for this purpose under Japanese regulations. This includes the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF). Certain other organizations may also be authorized depending on the driver's license and purpose of use. A translation by any private translation office is not automatically sufficient. Information can be found on the official website of the Japanese police and at the Japan Automobile Federation.

Does DriveDocs Japan issue the driver's license translation itself?

No. DriveDocs Japan does not issue the official driver's license translation itself. We handle the mediation and organize the application with our partner, the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF). Our team in Japan supports you with the bureaucratic process so that you can conveniently arrange the translation before your trip.

Can I apply for the JAF driver's license translation before my trip?

Yes. Through DriveDocs Japan, you can prepare the application online from outside Japan. You submit the required information and images of your driver's license, and our team in Japan takes over the further process. A direct application to JAF is subject to their current access and application conditions. Further information can be found in our guide to applying before arrival in Japan.

Can I apply for the JAF translation online myself?

Direct online application to JAF is subject to the current requirements of the provider and is generally intended for persons in Japan. If you are still outside Japan, you can use DriveDocs Japan: We handle the mediation and organize the application through JAF for you.

Why should I use DriveDocs Japan instead of applying directly to JAF?

DriveDocs Japan helps you organize the official Japanese driver's license translation before your departure. You upload the required documents online and provide your travel details. Our team in Japan handles the mediation and takes care of the further steps. This means you do not have to navigate the Japanese application process yourself. The official translation is issued by JAF, not by DriveDocs Japan.

What documents do I need for the application?

Generally, you need images of the front and back of your valid driver's license as well as the information required for processing and delivery. Please upload clearly legible, complete, and unaltered images. Depending on the document, additional information or documents may be required.

Can I apply for a translation if my driver's license is damaged?

That depends on the condition of the document. Slight signs of wear are not necessarily a problem, as long as all information is clearly legible. If important information is missing, illegible, or the document is heavily damaged, processing may fail. The car rental company may also refuse acceptance. Only upload images where all information is clearly visible.

What happens if my name on the driver's license is spelled differently than in my passport?

Different spellings can lead to questions during inspection or vehicle pickup. Therefore, check your information carefully and inform us about relevant discrepancies. A translation does not change the personal data on your driver's license.

How long does the JAF driver's license translation take?

The processing time depends on the workload, public holidays, the application method, and the selected option. Plan sufficient time before your trip. Express processing can be faster depending on availability, but is not a guarantee of a specific completion date. The currently available processing times can be found on our website and in the product information. Further details can be found in our article How long does a JAF translation take?.

Can I order an express driver's license translation for Japan?

Yes, provided the express option is offered at the time of ordering. It is intended to speed up the processing. The actual duration depends on the procedures at JAF and the current workload. Please note the processing times stated at the time of ordering and plan a sufficient buffer before picking up the rental car.

How much does a Japanese driver's license translation cost?

The total price depends on the selected option and the offered additional services. This can include mediation, processing of the JAF translation, provision of the print code, or printing and shipping. The fees from JAF can vary depending on the purpose of use. Please check the current prices on the DriveDocs Japan website. Further information can be found in our article JAF translation: Costs at a glance.

Can I use the Japanese driver's license translation to convert it into a Japanese driver's license?

Yes. An approved Japanese translation of the foreign driver's license is among the documents that may be required for conversion (Gaimen Kirikae). However, the translation alone does not guarantee that the conversion will be approved. Additional documents, proof, and examinations are based on the requirements of the relevant driver's license authority. Find out in advance from the local authority and on the official information page for conversion.

3. Ordering from DriveDocs Japan

How do I order a Japanese driver's license translation from DriveDocs Japan?

The order is placed online. You upload images of your driver's license, enter the required personal information and your travel details, and select the desired provision method. We then organize the application for the official translation with JAF. You do not have to carry out the application yourself locally in Japan.

What delivery options does DriveDocs Japan offer?

Depending on the current offer, you can choose between two options:

  • 7-Eleven printing: You will receive a print code by email before your trip and print the provided translation yourself after arriving in Japan.
  • Printing and shipping: DriveDocs Japan prints the translation in Japan and sends it by post to the specified address.

You can see which option and, if applicable, express options are available directly when ordering.

When will I receive my print code?

The print code is usually sent by email a few days before your trip, typically one to two days before the specified travel date. This prevents the code from expiring before you arrive. Please enter your travel date correctly when ordering and also check your spam folder.

Why don't I receive the driver's license translation directly as a PDF?

DriveDocs Japan does not receive the official translation as a freely distributable PDF file as part of the JAF process. In the "7-Eleven printing" option, the translation is provided via the designated printing service. You will receive a print code and can print the document in Japan.

How long is my print code valid for?

The print code for the printing option is valid for seven days after it is provided, calculated according to Japanese local time. We therefore normally send the code only shortly before your trip. Print the translation within this period and keep the printed document carefully.

Can I receive the print code weeks before my trip?

Normally, no. Since the print code is only valid for seven days, it is only sent shortly before your trip. Please make sure that your travel date is entered correctly when ordering.

Can I print the translation in Japan at 7-Eleven?

Yes. With the "7-Eleven printing" option, you will receive a print code by email. You can use it to print the provided translation at a suitable multifunction printer in Japan. You can find detailed step-by-step instructions on our 7-Eleven printing instructions page.

How do I print my driver's license translation in Japan?

If you have ordered the "7-Eleven printing" option, follow these steps:

  1. Open the email from DriveDocs Japan and have your print code ready.
  2. Find a suitable 7-Eleven in Japan.
  3. Use the multifunction device in the store.
  4. Select the appropriate printing function and follow the instructions on the screen.
  5. Enter your print code and check the print settings.
  6. Print the translation and check that all pages are complete and legible.

The exact steps may vary depending on the device and printing service. Therefore, also follow our detailed printing instructions.

Can I also print my driver's license translation at Lawson or FamilyMart?

The available printing options depend on the printing service used and the respective delivery method. Therefore, check the information in your email and the printing instructions. Use your code only at a supported printing device and follow the steps provided there.

What is Netprint and how does it work?

Netprint is a cloud printing service in Japan that allows provided documents to be printed at compatible multifunction printers. DriveDocs Japan uses a corresponding digital delivery process so that you can print your translation yourself after arriving in Japan without having to wait for a postal shipment. You can find out which printing devices are supported and how to enter the code in your email and the printing instructions.

What happens if my print code has expired?

If your print code expires before you print it, please contact DriveDocs Japan support at support@drivedocsjapan.com. We will review your case and inform you about the available options. Please contact us as early as possible and not just before picking up the rental car.

What happens if I lose my printed translation?

If you lose the printed translation, you should arrange an alternative solution before your next trip. The print code can only be used once. Contact DriveDocs Japan so we can check what options are available for re-provisioning. A new order may be required.

Can I also receive my translation by post?

Yes. With the "Printing and shipping" option, DriveDocs Japan prints the translation in Japan and sends it to the address you provided. Please note the shipping times specified when ordering and plan enough time before your departure.

Do I need to expect customs duties on a shipment from Japan?

For a shipment containing a driver's license translation, different regulations may apply depending on the recipient country, the classification by customs authorities, and the shipping service provider's procedures. Additional fees are not necessarily excluded. Any import duties or processing fees are determined by the responsible authorities or shipping service providers and may be payable by the recipient.

4. Rental cars in Japan

Can I pick up a rental car in Japan with a JAF driver's license translation?

Yes, provided your driver's license is valid for the relevant vehicle class, the translation is recognized, and you meet all the requirements. When picking up the car, you should have your original driver's license, the Japanese translation, and your passport ready. Check the requirements of your rental car company in advance.

Does every rental car company in Japan require a Japanese driver's license translation?

The required documents depend on the country where the driver's license was issued and the legal requirements. For driver's licenses from Germany, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Monaco, and Taiwan, a recognized Japanese translation is generally required for temporary driving. Rental car providers must check the legally required documents. Further information can be found in our guide to car rentals in Japan.

Does Toyota Rent a Car accept a Japanese driver's license translation?

If you meet the legal requirements, you should present your original foreign driver's license, the required Japanese translation, and your passport when picking up the vehicle. Check the current requirements directly with Toyota Rent a Car or with your specific booking agency.

Does Nissan Rent a Car accept a Japanese driver's license translation?

The required documents depend on your driver's license and the applicable regulations. Have your original driver's license, the recognized Japanese translation, and your passport ready. Check the current conditions directly with Nissan Rent a Car before pickup.

Can I rent a car from ORIX Rent a Car with a Swiss driver's license?

In principle, this is possible, provided your Swiss driver's license is valid and you present the required recognized Japanese translation as well as all other required documents. Check the current requirements directly with ORIX Rent a Car before picking up the vehicle.

What documents do rental car companies in Japan check?

Depending on the provider and booking, the following documents and information may be required:

  • valid original foreign driver's license;
  • recognized Japanese driver's license translation, if required;
  • passport;
  • other identification documents, if applicable;
  • the payment method required at the time of booking.

Check the requirements directly with the rental car company before your trip. A confirmed booking alone does not guarantee that you can pick up a vehicle without the required documents.

Can I rent a car at Narita Airport with a Japanese driver's license translation?

Yes, provided you meet the legal requirements and present the required documents. This generally also applies to rental car stations at Narita Airport. Check the opening hours, pickup conditions, and document requirements of your provider before arrival.

Can I drive from Tokyo to Mount Fuji?

Is a rental car recommended for a trip to Okinawa?

A rental car can be particularly convenient in Okinawa if you want to visit various beaches and attractions. Plan your route in advance and make sure you have the required documents for picking up the vehicle with you.

Can I use expressways and toll roads in Japan?

Yes. With a suitable rental car and a valid driver's license, you can generally use Japanese expressways and toll roads. An ETC card can simplify toll payment. Check with your rental car provider whether a card is available and how the fees are charged.

5. Common Problems and Special Cases

What happens if my driver's license expires during the trip?

You must not drive with an expired driver's license. If your driver's license becomes invalid during your trip, the corresponding translation cannot also establish further driving authorization. Check the expiration date before your departure and arrange any necessary extensions in good time.

What should I do if I lose my passport in Japan?

Contact the local authorities and the embassy or consulate of your home country immediately to report the loss and apply for replacement documents. Before continuing your trip, find out which documents you need to prove your identity and your driving authorization.

What happens if my flight to Japan is canceled?

Contact DriveDocs Japan as early as possible if your trip changes or your flight is canceled. Whether a cancellation or refund is possible depends especially on whether the application to JAF has already been made and what costs have already been incurred. Once the translation has been requested and corresponding costs have been incurred, a refund may no longer be possible.

Depending on the situation, we can check alternative options, for example, printing and shipping the translation to your address. Whether this is possible depends on the processing status and the specific circumstances. Write to us at support@drivedocsjapan.com so we can review your case.

Can I get an invoice for my travel cancellation insurance?

Contact us if your flight has been canceled and you need documents for your travel cancellation insurance. We can provide you with a corresponding invoice of the costs incurred upon request. Whether your insurance reimburses these costs is decided by your insurer based on the applicable insurance terms and conditions.

Is my driver's license translation still valid after a change in my personal details?

If important details on your driver's license change, for example your name or the driver's license classes, you should have it checked whether a new translation is required. The translation must match your valid original driver's license.

Will my Japanese driver's license translation be accepted during a police check?

A properly issued and recognized Japanese driver's license translation is intended to be presented together with the original driver's license. The police may request further documents, especially to check your entry and the permitted duration of your driving authorization.
